EU, Japan Wary Of BHP-Rio Tinto Merger Plan

Law360, New York (February 8, 2008, 12:00 AM EST) -- The proposed merger between mining titans BHP Billiton and Rio Tinto has attracted the attention of European and Japanese antitrust regulators, who say the deal could produce a duopoly that wields too much power over the price of iron ore.

Though neither has begun an investigation, members of the Competition Commission in the European Union and the Fair Trade Commission in Japan have met informally to discuss possible antitrust concerns.
