Law Firm Loses Appeal To Represent Client In Dismissed Suit

Law360, Los Angeles (August 27, 2013, 10:59 PM ET) -- A California appeals court on Tuesday shot down a bid by attorney Douglas L. Mahaffey to get the state’s courts to declare him legally able to represent a bankrupt oil and gas contractor he no longer works for, on the grounds that no real controversy exists.

The three-judge panel wrote in Tuesday’s decision that the attorney’s request for declaratory relief to allow his firm, Mahaffey & Associates, to represent Angus Petroleum Corp. and BG Operations LLC when the two became opposing parties in BG’s bankruptcy negotiations...
