USDA Meat Inspection Pilots May Compromise Safety: GAO

Law360, New York (September 4, 2013, 5:00 PM EDT) -- The U.S. Department of Agriculture's pilot projects for chicken, turkey and hog inspection may threaten food and worker safety, since they allow for faster slaughter line speeds than normal, a government watchdog said on Wednesday.

The agency also does not require the slaughter plant workers who sort carcasses for USDA inspectors under the projects to undergo training, and the training that does occur is not standardized, according to a U.S. Government Accountability Office report.
