Canada Makes Agrium Shed Assets In Farm Store Buy

Law360, New York (September 6, 2013, 5:45 PM EDT) -- Agrium Inc. has reached a settlement with Canadian competition regulators giving the fertilizer manufacturer clearance to acquire most of Viterra Inc.'s retail farm supply business in exchange for divesting some of its assets, regulators said Thursday.

The consent order that Alberta, Canada-based Agrium entered into with the country’s Competition Bureau, which had expressed reservations that the company's acquisition of 200-plus stores from Viterra would have anti-competitive effects, required the company to shed seven stores, along with nine anhydrous ammonia businesses.
