EU Lawmakers Advance Bill Capping Food-Based Biofuel Use

Law360, New York (September 11, 2013, 3:56 PM ET) -- European lawmakers on Wednesday signed off on plans to limit the amount of food-based biofuels used to reach European renewable energy targets, amid concerns that converting land to grow crops for fuel production undermines greenhouse gas emissions cuts.

By a 356-327 vote with 14 abstentions, the European Parliament approved draft legislation to amend existing European Union biofuel laws that would cap the portion of food-based biofuels used to meet the renewable energy target at 6 percent, down from 10 percent.
