NJ Town Sends Message With Fracking Ban

Law360, New York (September 18, 2013, 6:47 PM EDT) -- Hoping to inspire other towns, Highland Park, N.J., has banned fracking within its borders in what officials believe is a first for the state.

There are no natural gas deposits in New Jersey currently subject to the controversial gas extraction method and the suburban, nearly 14,000-person borough would be an unlikely drilling site regardless. Still, though the ban that Highland Park's governing council approved Thursday may be mostly symbolic, fracking's environmental threats are real and potentially far-reaching, officials suggest.
