FTC Kicks Off Broad 'Patent Troll' Probe

Law360, New York (September 27, 2013, 2:10 PM EDT) -- The Federal Trade Commission announced Friday that it is launching a wide-ranging study of the tactics of so-called patent trolls, using its subpoena power to seek information from dozens of companies about how they operate and assert the patents they own.

The commission voted 4-0 to begin the study, which was proposed by FTC Chairwoman Edith Ramirez in a June speech in which she said companies with a business model based primarily on acquiring patents and filing lawsuits "raise red flags for competition and consumers." ...
