HHS To Furlough Over Half Its Employees During Shutdown

Law360, New York (September 30, 2013, 5:12 PM EDT) -- The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services will have to furlough a little over half its employees because of the government shutdown that began at midnight Tuesday, a move that will halt the department’s programs including most of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s food safety-related activities, according to the agency.

The government shutdown will put some 52 percent of HHS employees on furlough, with grant-making agencies seeing the most temporary cuts, according to a 2014 contingency staffing plan the agency issued Friday afternoon....
