Reporting For Duty: The Week In DOD Contract Awards

By Emily Atkin (October 3, 2013, 4:12 PM EDT) -- Lockheed Martin Corp. was the biggest winner this week, nabbing two U.S Navy contract modifications on Sept. 27 totaling $4.2 billion — $3.4 billion and $742 million, respectively. The contracts call for Lockheed to produce a cumulative of 40 F-35 Lightning II joint strike fighter aircrafts, which are single-seat, single-engine aircrafts, according to Lockheed. The Navy's $3.4 billion award ordered Lockheed to produce 19 military planes for the U.S. Air Force; six for the U.S. Marine Corps, four for the Navy, two for Norway, three for Italy and one for the United Kingdom. The $742 million award placed an order for three aircrafts for Italy and two for Australia. Both orders were placed by the Naval Air Systems Command at Patuxent River Naval Air Station in Maryland, according to the U.S. Department of Defense....
