FRAND Rulings To Rein In Standard-Essential Patent Demands

Law360, New York (October 4, 2013, 8:05 PM ET) -- Now that two courts have rejected methods that would lead to large royalties rates for standard-essential patents, SEP owners might have to rethink their licensing demands, attorneys say.

A judge ruled Thursday that a fair, reasonable and nondiscriminatory royalty for Innovatio IP Ventures LLC's standard-essential Wi-Fi patents would be 9.56 cents per unit, far lower than the several dollars per unit that Innovatio had sought.
