S. Korea, China Gaining On U.S. In Patent Apps: UN

Law360, New York (February 22, 2008, 12:00 AM ET) -- Although the United States maintains its position as the top innovator of the world, China and South Korea are making significant strides in filing patent applications, according to a report released by the United Nations patent agency.

The Geneva-based World Intellectual Property Organization said Thursday that a record 156,000 patent applications were filed across the globe last year, marking a 4.7% filing increase from 2006. About 7,000 applications came from South Korea and nearly 5,500 from China.
