Calif. Gov. Snubs Bill Taking Aim At Bogus Attys

Law360, San Diego (October 10, 2013, 10:54 PM EDT) -- California Gov. Jerry Brown on Wednesday vetoed a measure that would have given the State Bar of California stronger enforcement tools to go after individuals who pose as lawyers but don’t have a license to practice law.

A.B. 888, authored by state Assemblyman Roger Dickinson, D-Sacramento, and sponsored by the state bar, proposed to allow the bar to seek civil penalties, attorneys’ fees and remedies for consumers against those who engage in the unauthorized practice of law, but the governor said the measure was unnecessary....
