Markey Urges FTC Probe Into Cross-Device Data Tracking

Law360, New York (October 11, 2013, 4:54 PM ET) -- Sen. Edward Markey, D-Mass., on Thursday urged the Federal Trade Commission to launch a probe into the rising trend of cross-device information tracking, wherein data brokers use sophisticated methods to monitor multiple, unconnected devices belonging to the same person.

Markey requested the FTC investigate a practice he warned raises serious privacy concerns by allowing American consumers to be unwittingly tracked across platforms, saying such tracking could empower advertisers to gain even deeper insight into the behavior and habits of consumers without their consent.
