Zynga's Win In Mattel Scrabble Case Affirmed By UK Court

Law360, Washington (October 16, 2013, 6:35 PM ET) -- The England and Wales Court of Appeal has nixed Mattel Inc.'s attempt to ban Zynga Inc. and others from imitating its classic Scrabble tile design, saying earlier this month that the word-game maker's tiles aren't a viable trademark.

In a decision handed down on Oct. 4, the three-judge panel unanimously affirmed the lower court's summary judgment ruling in Zynga's favor, noting that Mattel's and JW Spear & Sons Ltd.'s ivory tile with a black letter-and-number design had too many permutations to be considered a valid trademark....
