SEC's White Tempers Tough Cop Stance On Enforcement

Law360, Washington (October 22, 2013, 12:58 PM ET) -- U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission head Mary Jo White said Tuesday that charges filed against errant market participants bolster industry compliance with agency rules, but said the agency carefully scrutinizes cases before entering enforcement actions.

Although White has touted the agency's “tough cop” approach to policing the securities market in recent speeches, she acknowledged at a National Society of Compliance Professionals conference Tuesday that SEC's charging authority “has to be wielded appropriately with discretion.”
