Deals Rumor Mill: BlackBerry, HP, Apax Partners

CEO John Sculley is considering making a bid for beleaguered smartphone maker BlackBerry Ltd. alongside unnamed Canadian partners, sources told the Globe and Mail on Thursday. Sculley, who has said he is a longtime BlackBerry user, would enter the fray with a bid that could rival an existing preliminary offer worth $4.7 billion from Fairfax Financial Holdings Ltd., the phone maker's biggest shareholder. BlackBerry's co-founders, Mike Lazaridis and Doug Fregin, have also indicated they could pursue a buyout of the company and Cerberus Capital Management LP has been widely rumored to be interested in making a play. Chinese device manufacturer Lenovo Group Ltd. is also believed to be circling, as well as patent-focused private equity firm Coller Capital Inc....
