AIG Ruling Offers Rare Route To Stopping Arbitration

Law360, New York (November 6, 2013, 7:38 PM EST) -- A Michigan federal court recently froze reinsurance arbitration proceedings involving an American International Group Inc. affiliate before a final award was made, a decision so unconventional that it is almost certain to be cited by arbitration parties itching for early court intervention.

Star Insurance Co., Savers Property & Casualty Insurance Co. and others persuaded U.S. District Judge Victoria Roberts to halt an arbitration stemming from a reinsurance treaty with AIG unit National Union Fire Insurance Co. of Pittsburgh, Pa., that covered workers' compensation losses.
