Wash. Loss Throws GMO Labeling Strategy Into Doubt

Law360, New York (November 6, 2013, 7:52 PM EST) -- Tuesday's defeat of a Washington state initiative won't quash the drive to require the labeling of genetically modified food, but it may cause proponents to shift away from ballot measures and toward legislation and focused pressure on companies to voluntarily adopt the labeling.

Though the state is still counting votes, Washington residents appear to have rejected Initiative 522, a ballot measure that would have required companies to label genetically engineered fruits, vegetables and other agricultural goods, as well as processed food made with genetically engineered ingredients....
