Shell Distorts Nigeria Oil Spill Data, Report Says

Law360, New York (November 07, 2013, 7:31 PM ET) -- The human rights group Amnesty International USA is accusing a Royal Dutch Shell PLC unit of lying about oil spills in Nigeria by underestimating the volume of oil released and wrongly blaming many spills on local thieves, according to a report released Thursday.

There is “no legitimate basis” to support claims from Shell Petroleum Development Co. and other producers that the vast majority of oil spills are caused by foul play, according to the report, which criticizes the Nigerian investigation process, which relies heavily on self-reporting....
