USPTO Sides With Garmin In 1st Inter Partes Review Ruling

Law360, Los Angeles (November 13, 2013, 10:56 PM EST) -- The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office sided with Garmin International Inc. in the first decision issued under the new inter partes review process, finding that Cuozzo Speed Technology LLC’s speedometer that alerts drivers to the speed limit wasn’t patentable.

In a decision issued Wednesday, the USPTO said Garmin met its burden of providing enough evidence to show that the claims in the patent protecting the global positioning system-linked speedometer on a liquid crystal display were obvious and partially described in other patents.
