IRS Bungled Online Payment Program, Says Watchdog

Law360, New York (November 27, 2013, 3:49 PM EST) -- Due to the Internal Revenues Service's failure to promote its Online Payment Agreement application, only about 300,000 people have signed up since its inception in 2006, a number well short of the IRS's 3.2 million goal, a government watchdog report found Wednesday.

The Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration said the IRS's failure to properly inform the public about the Online Payment Agreement application resulted in a failure to collect $393 million in tax revenues and increased administrative costs by almost $17 million.
