AGs Urge FDA To Rethink High-Powered Painkiller Approval

Law360, New York (December 12, 2013, 3:06 PM EST) -- A bipartisan coalition of attorneys general from 29 states and territories urged the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Tuesday to reconsider its recent approval of narcotic painkiller Zohydro ER, warning that the drug’s potent formulation makes it particularly susceptible to abuse.

The state officials claim the high-dose painkiller is as much as 10 times more powerful than typical hydrocodone-based drugs, and argue that the availability of Zohydro risks further worsening a national prescription drug abuse problem that has risen to epidemic proportions.
