Exclude Volunteer Firefighters From ACA Mandate, Sens. Urge

Law360, New York (December 16, 2013, 6:58 PM ET) -- A group of senators on Monday wrote the U.S. Department of the Treasury and the U.S. Department of Labor, asking that volunteer first responders not count toward the Affordable Care Act’s coverage mandate for businesses with more than 50 employees.

In an open letter, the seven Democrats and one Republican wrote that combination and volunteer fire departments lack the necessary guidance about how the employer shared responsibility provision of the new law will classify volunteers.
