EU Takes Brazil To WTO Over Import Fees On Cars, Computers

Law360, New York (December 19, 2013, 11:45 AM ET) -- The European Union on Thursday requested formal consultations at the World Trade Organization with Brazil over its series of import fees and tax schemes aimed at products such as automobiles and computers that the 28-nation bloc claims are discriminatory.

The crux of the EU complaint is that the fees are charged only to imported products, thereby giving domestic producers a leg up in the market. The EU's consultation request also targets a Brazilian tax regime that it says gives benefits only to local producers.
