House Dems Push To Extend Local Sales Tax Deductions

Law360, New York (December 20, 2013, 12:23 PM ET) -- Five House Democrats urged the House Ways and Means Committee to extend a deduction on state and local sales taxes that expires on Jan. 1, telling Chairman Dave Camp, R-Mich., in a letter Friday the deduction is critical in states without income taxes.

States that do not assess personal income taxes, like Washington, Florida, Tennessee and Texas, make up for the loss in revenue by assessing higher sales taxes, and the politicians say the deduction is necessary so taxpayers in those states pay a fairer share...
