HMA Gives Docs Kickbacks For Needless Tests, Suit Says

Law360, New York (January 3, 2014, 3:46 PM EST) -- Health Management Associates Inc. offered kickbacks and other financial incentives to emergency room physicians to run costly tests and unnecessarily admit patients, the attorneys who filed a False Claims Act suit against the company on two North Carolina doctors’ behalf said Friday.

The qui tam suit from Drs. Thomas L. Mason and Steven G. Folstad, alleging HMA defrauded Medicare and Medicaid, became public in December after the U.S. Department of Justice joined the action in connection with some of the claims.
