Shopping While Black: Bias In NYC Department Stores

Law360, New York (January 15, 2014, 12:39 AM EST) -- The year 2013 served up a number of reminders that too many people share a bias linking all people of color with criminality. In a series of reports and editorials, starting in late October, newspapers were filled with stories of Black and Latino shoppers in New York City who were questioned and detained for suspicion of shoplifting solely because they had the audacity to purchase expensive items at exclusive clothing stores or because they attempted to return legitimate purchases at other department stores.
