SIGAR Blasts State Dept.'s Afghan Justice Oversight

Law360, New York (January 24, 2014, 6:16 PM EST) -- The U.S. Department of State needs to provide better management and stronger oversight for its justice sector development programs in Afghanistan, according to a report released Friday by the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction.

SIGAR’s report, which was formally requested by Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., nearly a year ago, revealed that the State Department’s so-called “rule of law” programs are marred by ambiguous benchmarks for progress, unrealistic goals, flawed implementation and a lack of performance oversight.
