Tax Court Opens Door For More Abatement Challenges

Law360, New York (January 27, 2014, 8:17 PM EST) -- The U.S. Tax Court on Monday provided taxpayers greater ammunition to fight for tax abatements when it declined to dismiss a petition challenging the Internal Revenue Service's refusal to suspend interest accruing on a California pair's years-old tax liabilities. 

The ruling rejects the IRS' claims that the court lacks jurisdiction to hear a petition filed by Charles and Linda Corbalis, and that the twosome brought the case prematurely. The Tax Court noted, however, that the taxpayers' petition and further attempts to suspend interest on their liabilities...
