Senate Bill Would Punish Cos. For Lax Data Security

Law360, Washington (February 04, 2014, 9:12 PM ET) -- Two Democratic senators introduced a bill Tuesday that would create "stringent" penalties for companies that fail to establish safeguards against data breaches or quickly notify consumers that their information has been compromised.

Sens. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., and Ed Markey, D-Mass., claimed that the Personal Data Protection and Breach Accountability Act provides a multipronged approach for retailers to create security plans and work with federal agencies and law enforcement after an attack has occurred.
