EU Advances Fluorinated Greenhouse Gas Ban

Law360, New York (March 12, 2014, 4:01 PM EDT) -- European Union lawmakers on Wednesday voted overwhelmingly in favor of draft legislation prohibiting the use of fluorinated greenhouse gases in air conditioners and refrigerators by 2025 — rules that have already been informally agreed to by ministers from member states.

The European Parliament passed the so-called F-gas ban by a 644-19 margin, with lawmakers touting the expected long-term climate benefits. The draft legislation will reduce the use of potent hydroflurocarbon greenhouse gases by 79 percent in 2030, according to the EU.
