Commerce To Give Up Control Of ICANN

Law360, Los Angeles (March 14, 2014, 7:56 PM EDT) -- The U.S. Commerce Department announced on Friday that it plans to transition away from its oversight role of the nonprofit Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, which manages Internet domain names and addresses.

The government said it had tasked the Los Angeles-based ICANN to find a way to transfer the U.S.’s management of administrative functions to the wider Internet community. The Commerce Department said it would not allow ICANN to depend on a single government or multigovernment organization.
