HarperCollins Triumphs In E-Book Licensing Dispute

Law360, New York (March 17, 2014, 6:26 PM EDT) -- HarperCollins Publishers LLC won a decisive victory over Open Road Integrated Media LLP on Friday when a New York federal judge ruled that a contract from 1971 granted the publisher exclusive e-book licensing rights for a classic children’s novel.

U.S. District Judge Naomi Reice Buchwald found that HarperCollins’ original contract with the author of “Julie of the Wolves” was broad enough to include future electronically based licensing rights, meaning that Open Road had infringed the company’s rights under copyright law.
