Justices Mull Limits Of Religious Protection In ACA Case

Law360, Washington (March 25, 2014, 1:52 PM EDT) -- Several U.S Supreme Court justices questioned on Tuesday whether for-profit corporations can seek religious exemptions from the Affordable Care Act's contraception mandate, noting it could be difficult for courts to determine whether companies are practicing a religion.

During a 90-minute oral argument session, the justices questioned Hobby Lobby Stores Inc.'s counsel Paul D. Clement and Solicitor General Donald Verrilli on whether corporations are entitled to bring Religious Freedom Restoration Act claims and whether their decision could widen the statute's reach.
