Seeking Leverage Against Russia, Reps. Push Energy Exports

Law360, Washington (March 26, 2014, 2:46 PM EDT) -- House lawmakers called Tuesday for looser regulations that allow the U.S. to become a net exporter of liquefied natural gas, saying U.S. energy could tilt the scales against foreign adversaries like Russia, which has an energy stranglehold over Eastern Europe.

The House Committee on Foreign Affairs held a hearing on the “geopolitical potential of the U.S. energy boom,” with committee Chairman Ed Royce, R-Calif., saying that Russia’s command of the energy economy in Eastern Europe facilitated its recent aggression in the Crimean peninsula.
