Northwestern Football Players Get Green Light To Unionize

Law360, New York (March 26, 2014, 4:58 PM EDT) -- Northwestern University football players receiving scholarships are “employees” within the meaning of federal labor law and may unionize, a National Labor Relations Board regional director said in a landmark decision on Wednesday.

Peter Sung Ohr, the Chicago-based director of the NLRB's region 13, said in a 24-page decision that Northwestern's grant-in-aid scholarship players for the school's football team are “employees” under the National Labor Relations Act and directed an election for the players to choose whether to be represented by the College Athletes Players Association....
