EC Prepares Showdown Over French Protectionism

Law360, New York (March 31, 2006, 12:00 AM EST) -- A dispute over European competition policy is on the verge of boiling over, as the European Commission prepares to make an example out of France’s alleged economic nationalism—a move that could lead to a courtroom showdown between Brussels and Paris.

The Commission told reporters that officials agreed to send a warning letter to Paris Monday threatening a legal challenge to recent French legislation that shelters 11 strategic economic sectors from foreign takeovers in the name of national security.
