Meshwerks Loses Bid To Copyright Computer Models

Law360, New York (June 17, 2008, 12:00 AM EDT) -- In a case that ventures into novel terrain in intellectual property law, a federal appeals court has ruled that wire-frame computer models of Toyota vehicles that were used as the basis for a series of advertisements are not copyrightable in and of themselves.

Citing a U.S. Supreme Court decision from the 1880s, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit said that the wire-frame computer models created by Meshwerks Inc. added no unique or original expressions to Toyota's auto designs that would justify copyright protection....
