Forest Service Sued Over Calif. Tree-Clearing Plan

Law360, New York (August 13, 2008, 12:00 AM EDT) -- An environmental group is suing the U.S. Forest Service over a project it claims will destroy old-growth trees and habitats for the California spotted owl and other species in California's Lassen National Forest.

In a suit filed Monday in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of California, the Earth Island Institute accuses the agency of violating federal environmental laws by misusing tree-density figures to justify a project to clear trees and improve road access in a 7,500-acre section of the forest.
