HHS Proposes Rule For Anti-Abortion Health Workers

Law360, New York (August 25, 2008, 12:00 AM EDT) -- Prompting the outcry of some Democrats, the Bush administration has proposed a new rule to protect anti-abortion health workers who refuse to participate in sterilizations or abortions.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced a proposed rule on Thursday that would protect federally funded health workers' “right of conscience” by more strictly enforcing existing statutes. Under the new regulation, health care providers would need to prove compliance with the existing statutes or lose federal funding.
