E.U. Closes In On Pediatric Drug Patent Extensions

Law360, New York (June 1, 2006, 12:00 AM EDT) -- In the European Union, a bid to extend patent protection on some drugs in return for pediatric research has once again been approved by the European Parliament, after objections from the generic drug industry were overwhelmed by support for the proposal.

The proposal would grant pharmaceutical companies an additional six months of patent protection if new drugs are tested specifically on children before they are cleared for pediatric use.
