Insurance Co. Sues Over 'Birthday Gift' Policy Patent

Law360, New York (September 3, 2008, 12:00 AM EDT) -- Equitable Life & Casualty Insurance Co. has sued two rivals for allegedly infringing a patent for an insurance gift program that lets grandparents send personalized birthday cards and checks to their grandchildren for years after the grandparents have died.

Equitable Life filed a complaint Friday in the U.S. District Court for the District of Utah against Assurity Life Insurance Co. and Commemorative Life Insurance Services Inc., which run a joint Web site that advertises and sells a version of the gift program.
