CFPB Underplays Consumers' Right To Sue Debt Collectors

Law360, New York (August 25, 2015, 10:28 AM EDT) -- On July 16, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau released its first in a series of monthly reports[1] meant to highlight consumer complaint trends. The 7,400 debt collection complaints fielded by the CFPB in June 2015 accounted for almost a third of that month's complaints. For 22 months in a row, complaints about debt collection tactics outpaced all other types of complaints the CFPB received. This is consistent with the pattern of complaints received since the agency began fielding debt collection complaints in mid-2013....
