Deals Rumor Mill: Monsanto, Heineken, Novatek

By Benjamin Horney (August 24, 2015, 6:38 PM EDT) -- Monsanto Co. has upped its bid to buy Swiss agribusiness giant Syngenta AG from $45 billion to roughly $47 billion, Reuters reported Monday. Monsanto is hoping that the increased offer will encourage Syngenta to agree to negotiate. Farmers in Brazil, the second-largest market for Monsanto and Syngenta, have previously indicated they would oppose any tie-up between the two companies, and Brazil's antitrust regulator, known as Cade, is also expected to take its time evaluating any potential merger, according to previous reports. Earlier this month, reports surfaced saying German chemicals behemoth BASF SE was potentially getting ready to jump into the Syngenta takeover battle, lining up a loan package from large multinational banks in preparation of a takeover offer....
