Wal-Mart Shutters Ohio Store Amid Methane Fears

Law360, New York (September 16, 2008, 12:00 AM EDT) -- Wal-Mart Stores Inc. announced Monday that it had closed a Garfield Heights, Ohio, store built over a landfill amid concerns about methane gas and warnings over improper maintenance of the site from the state's environmental regulator.

Wal-Mart spokeswoman Tara Stewart said that an independent contractor hired by the company had found several safety hazards on the property, including a shifting foundation and the buildup of methane gas, rendering the store in the City View Center shopping complex too dangerous to operate.
