Newspaper Sale Under DoJ Scrutiny

Law360, New York (June 14, 2006, 12:00 AM EDT) -- Forging ahead with its purchase of two Philadelphia newspapers, publisher McClatchy Co. said this week federal regulators are separately seeking additional information concerning the sale of two California newspapers.

The developments mark the latest milestones stemming from McClatchy’s pending $4.5 billion acquisition of Knight-Ridder Inc., a process that has been ongoing since February, when McClatchy announced the deal.

The takeover is set to catapult McClatchy into the position of the second-largest newspaper publisher in the United States.
