'Superbanks' Unlikely To Draw Antitrust Ire: Experts

Law360, New York (September 23, 2008, 12:00 AM EDT) -- While antitrust regulators will most likely be examining the mergers and acquisitions currently sweeping through the financial services industry, they are not expected to find serious competition concerns or to get in the way as widespread consolidation gives rise to a select number of dominant “superbanks.”

The U.S. Department of Justice has typically been permissive of mergers in the financial industry, finding that as long as they don't affect the local retail banking market, they do not pose competition problems.
