EU Picks Up Probe Into BHP-Rio Tinto Deal

Law360, New York (September 29, 2008, 12:00 AM EDT) -- The European Union's competition watchdog has revved up its investigation into global mining giant BHP Billiton Ltd.'s hostile bid to take over Rio Tinto Group after the probe, which was launched in July, hit a snag in August when BHP dragged its feet in providing information requested by the agency.

The European Commission said Monday it would make a decision by January 2009 as to whether to step in and block the proposed $130 billion transaction, Agence France-Presse reported.
