TiVo sues EchoStar over DVR patent

Law360, New York (January 5, 2004, 12:00 AM EST) -- Digital video recorder company TiVo filed a patent infringement suit in federal court in Texas on Monday against EchoStar Communications, a satellite TV service provider, over set-top boxes that record television programming onto a built-in hard drive.

TiVo claims some of EchoStar's DVR set-top boxes infringe its "multimedia time warping system" patent, which it received in May 2001 from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

TiVo is seeking monetary awards and an injunction against future sales of DVRs by EchoStar.
