Kroes Puts European Telecom On Notice

Law360, New York (June 23, 2006, 12:00 AM EDT) -- An offhand comment by European Commission honcho Neelie Kroes has suddenly put Europe’s telecommunications giants on notice, raising fears that a sweeping antitrust investigation of the industry is in the works.

"Telecommunications could be an excellent area to start an inquiry," the Competition Commissioner said Friday after a speech at a business conference in Paris, according to wire reports. "That could be the third inquiry in my mandate.”

The first and second inquiries targeted the energy and financial services industries.
